AI in Schools: Accommodating or Abusive?

Although it is proven that Artificial Intelligence has been a major game changer in the lives of students through assisted help, detailed explanations, and even prompts, it brings awareness to the future of education as a whole for students.

Since November of 2022, hundreds of AI Chatbots have been released across the globe, providing various types of help in different aspects of every life. Tailored to assist its clients with questions regarding education, the world, and even advice, Chatbots have become the answer to every question one might have. Recently, Google Bard has slowly been gaining attention for its “natural sounding” language, and it’s up-to-date data. Sites like these prove for just a few of the many factors that appeal to users, and reveal some of the most important aspects of dealing with AI– emotion.

From a student’s perspective, I first started referring to AI Chatbots like ChatGPT and Bard at the beginning of the school year. During the start of my journey with AI, I used these Chatbots for inspiration and innovative purposes. If I was stuck on a story I was writing in school, I would ask for prompts to spike an idea, or if I was trying to decide on what to draw, I would ask for suggestions based on my interests.

Other than my experiences with AI, how have students worldwide been using them? Or abusing them? In many places, English teachers have been taking precautions by making students write out their essays and projects by hand as opposed to online, where supervision is in the hands of a computer. As well, many teachers have been prioritizing limiting cell phone usage in class to stop cheating on essays, tests, and even quizzes.
